Thailand celebrates their King (Bhumibol Adulyadej) 83rd Birthday

Thais celebrate today the 83rd birthday of their beloved King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, the World’s longest reigning monarch.

Bhumibol Adulyadej’s wish for his birthday was that his citizens should do their best to maintain peace and order in the country.

On sidewalks close to the hospital, the crowd was five or six deep, with those immediately along the street kneeling reverentially. Police and soldiers lined the entire route for the 12-minute journey through Bangkok.

Along the route from the hospital to the palace, Thais waved national flags and chanted ”Long live the king.”

Any discussion of the royal family is an extremely sensitive topic in politically turbulent Thailand, where the palace has also been silent over the organization of the king’s succession.

The king has no official political role but is seen as a unifying figure in a country that is frequently riven by political unrest, including mass opposition protests this year that turned deadly.

The birthday of King Bhumibol is marked by a public holiday and celebrated by Thais across the kingdom with fireworks and Buddhist rituals.

Later Sunday, Abhisit is to lead Thais in lighting candles to wish the king happy birthday.

King Bhumibol has been in hospital since Sept. 19 last year.
