Obama Announced that the Millitary Mission in Iraq is Over

The seven years of American combat mission in Iraq finally came to an end, as President Obama declared.  On Tuesday the Unites States president said : “Through this remarkable chapter in the history of the United States and Iraq, we have met our responsibility. Now, it’s time to turn the page.”

He also praise the troops who fought and died in Iraq, although it is convinced that this war was a mistake from the beggining.

In his speech Obama mentioned that he thinks that violence would continue in Iraq and that the United States would continue to play a key role in keeping a stable democracy there.

“We have spent over a trillion dollars at war, often financed by borrowing from overseas,” he said. “And so at this moment, as we wind down the war in Iraq, we must tackle those challenges at home with as much energy and grit and sense of common purpose as our men and women in uniform who have served abroad.”

“Much has changed since that night,” when Mr. Bush announced the war in Iraq, Mr. Obama said. “A war to disarm a state became a fight against an insurgency. Terrorism and sectarian warfare threatened to tear Iraq apart. Thousands of Americans gave their lives; tens of thousands have been wounded. Our relations abroad were strained. Our unity at home was tested.”

A total of 4,400 American soldiers and more than 70,000 Iraqis have lost their life ,  according to United States and Iraqi government figures.

Mr. Obama said: “Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country.”
