Apple enters Social Networking with Music (Ping)

Apple cornered the MP3 player, mobile phone and computer tablet markets with the iPod, iPhone and iPad, but last night Apple announced another move , into social media with Ping.

Ping will enable users, or “Pingers” to follow musicians, friends and others to see details about what music they’re buying and what concerts or shows they’re attending.

Ping will be integrated into Apple’s latest iTunes software update said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, also he said that the information will arrive in a long stream of updates, similar to the other two big social media platforms Facebook and Twitter.

The service is available to more than 160 million iTunes users, Jobs said, and will also be available across the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Also, the iTunes logo will no longer feature a CD.

To be sure, Apple’s bets on social networking aren’t certain to pay off. But these efforts signal that the company is serious about becoming a social networking player. It’s going to be fun to see how well it succeeds.
