A volcano from Ecuador is about to erupt!


Ecuadorean authorities have decreed maximum alert level Saturday around the volcano Tungurahua, in the center of the country, whose work has intensified in the morning.

“We have declared red alert in the area of influence due to volcanic eruptive process,”  told for a press conference Felipe Bazan, number two in the National Risk Management Secretariat (Civil Defence).

Director of the Geophysical Institute in Quito, Hugo Yepez said that the red alert refers to localities close to eight miles from the volcano with an altitude of 5029 meters, located about 135 kilometers south of Quito in the province of Chimborazo .

Starting Saturday morning, said the institute, was seen a “rapid and sustained increase in seismic activity “, accompanied by explosions of ash and incandescent material.

Banos a  tourist town, situated at the foot of the volcano  with 15,000 inhabitants, is threatened when will be a powerful eruption, as localities Cusua, Juibe Chico and Bilbao, where evacuations were ordered for part of the population.

“We have no exact number” of people evacuated, said Felipe Bazan, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa saying that he is  participating in a Latin American summit in the Argentine city of Mar de Plata, and has been informed about this situation.

Tungurahua volcano is  in erupting  since 1999, but has been intensification of activity. In 2006, six people have died during such an intensification of volcanic activity, while this year more alerts were issued.
